Haworth Take 2

Tuesday we went back to Haworth to do the walk that we wanted to do last week, This time it didn’t rain so we managed to do the walk.
We followed the signs that said Bronte Falls, Along the way we must have diverted as the signs had disappeared so we didn’t know which way to go, Horace decided to stand on some rocks and then he slid down them it was quiet worrying and at the same time amusing to see him sliding down while trying to stop himself. We tried to coax him back up a safer rout but as soon as we started to walk to the safer rout he just ran back up the rocks he just slid down.
After that we found a path and followed that, we could see a sign coming up and as we got closer we realised that we had just walked round in circles, But this sign said the Bronte Falls are in 2 different directions so we decided to go back the way we came and eventually we came across another sign so we went the way it told us.
We kept walking and looking out for these falls and we came across these falls but we then thought nah these are a bit small so we carried on...

After a bit more walking we came across this fall...Getting bigger but again too small...

So on we went taking a few pictures on our way, The pictures aren’t brilliant as it was a very overcast day.

We got there in the end but we are unsure as to which are the falls, either way it’s a very nice area.

Horace went for a paddle in the water and then got very excited and was running around like a mad one, We didn’t get any footage of this as we didn’t think of it till afterwards.

Haworth

Went to Haworth today for the day, When we got there it started raining so we found a cafe called Ye Olde Bronte Tea Rooms and gift shop, Run by two very pleasant and welcoming ladies, They also welcome well behaved dogs and they get a slice of toast free too.
Once it stopped raining we went to the tourist information point and got a map for a walk, we set off and the heavens opened up our map got wet so we decided to turn back and go for a ride on the steam train instead.
The steam train is part of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, It cost us £16 return for 2 adults, The train goes to Keighley and back to Haworth, There is a 20 minute stop in Keighley while they turn the train round. While we where there there where some morris dances and a small beer festival.
When we got back to Haworth and in the car home the rain stopped and the sun came out, Oh and there was a Halloween parade up the main street too, But we missed that. Oh well maybe next year.
We still had a good day out though.

Marsden Moor

We went for a drive up to Marsden Moor today to give Horace a trip out and a change of scenery.
We went up towards Emely Moor mast which is a TV transmitter that stands 330.4 metres (1,084 ft) tall. Its an iconic structure for thousands of people around Yorkshire, It’s one of those buildings that say your home after a long journey.
I took this picture today from about a mile or two away.

In the opposite direction from where this photo was taken is a small wind farm, I got some quick snaps of this, I need to go back and get some better shots with a better camera sometime.

After this we went up to Marsden Moor.
On the side where we climbed there are these small chimneys that have water vapour coming out of them, We are not sure why these are there.
And there is a little memorial cross for the 7th Battalion 2nd/7th Battalion in memory of the Duke Of Wellingtons Regiment 1939 - 1945.

Horace loved his day out he got all excited when the wind was blowing and we started doing a kite man. Bless him.
He’s shattered now and fast asleep on the couch.

Are FIA Corrupt?

I really believe they are after watching the grand prix this week, Lets start with the race at Valencia where Ferrari pulled out in front of a car coming down the pits, What did they get ... a fine that’s what, something that will not affect there chances of winning, Now lets look at this weeks race, Hamilton got pushed into the escape route by Kimi this forced Hamilton to take the lead which he gave back to Kimi before passing the line, after passing the line Hamilton then took over Kimi at the bend to take the lead.
So what was wrong with that? Nothing as far as I and thousands other people can see.

Its enough to make you think they are accepting bribes.......

First crop of potatoes

Not much has happened on our walks with Horace over the last few weeks that’s why I haven’t posted anything.

Today we pulled up our potatoes and got 2.5 kilo I’m quite pleased with that for our first crop, For next year we are planning on making some potato boxes to grow them in that we can keep topping up with compost as they grow.

A few weeks ago I planted a pea just to see if it would grow, It did start to grow and is now a small plant, I made a mesh tube out of some screen printing mesh and put that around the pea plant and made a top for it, It’s all very rough as you can see in the picture below left, This has stopped any chance of slugs getting inside and eating the plant, also it lets in air and water.
For next year we plan to make mesh covers for all our vegetables.

Update on the cygnets

Well it is bad news, the swans we saw on Saturday are the swans we have been feeding the last few months, So yes they have lost 2 of their cygnets, They looked better today but still a little sad, the mother swan was looking around as if she was expecting the lost cygnets to come back.
We where hoping that they had paired up with other swans but Louise did some searching and found out that the young swans can stay with their parents for about 2 years.

We think we have had some bad news today, The swans we have been feeding over the last six months or so and then watching them nesting and having three cygnets, Well we haven’t seen them for about two weeks. Then today we saw two swans and a cygnet on the canal, When we got to them we looked at the ring number and we think it read Y126 which is the number of the female swan we have been feeding, but they didn’t react the same as they have done in the past in-fact they didn’t look very well at all and what’s worse is that they only had one cygnet with them, so that means they must of lost two off them,we had got really attached to the swans so this has upset us both. We are hoping we will see them tomorrow and we will check the number again just to make sure.

Gardening

We made another raised bed last week and this week we put in 720ltrs of compost and planted the veg that we where growing in the greenhouses, We have to put mesh round the frames to stop the neighbours cats from using then as luxury litter trays. We have got sweet corn, spinach, letuce, sprouts, tomatoes, beetroot and probably something else. We also got a Bluberry bush too.

On our morning walk we heard some squeaking noise, it sounded a bit like a bird, We couldn’t see anything at first then I spotted something moving, I couldn’t get the right words out and ended up say to Louise babies babies and pointing to the other side of the canal, We looked though our binoculars and where convinced that we saw 2 baby otters running around playing.

Our pond Had a vist from another frog today, We did have some small frogpoles in but we think they have left now. I got a photo of the frog today.

Got up early today and watered the plants then spent most of the time looking in the pond. Saw a dead frog-pole so I took that out, I got a bit concerned about the rest of them and thinking the water might not be good enough, So I poured 2 watering cans full of fresh water in. I also saw a red worm like thing in the pond too, I couldn’t get a photo of it because of the reflection on the water. I got a photo of the dead frog-pole though.

Just been on our walk with Horace, The swans cygnets are doing fine, They are difficult to take photos of by them selves, A bit too active and still a bit clingy but I did manage to get this shot.

Plant Beds : Part 2

We have built a flimsy support to fasten the mesh to that will hopefully stop the cats from using the beds as a litter tray. I’m not really happy with them, I want something a bit more stable but we did just use what we had lying around.
We also got more pea gravel and covered the rest of the garden with that. I think we need a few more bags just to finish off.

We have started to put down some pea shingle in our garden, We also have made our rectangular plant bed into two triangular plant beds, This has made it look more interesting and our neighbours like it too.

I think I will start to split my photography pages up into different sections, Not sure how yet but one idea was to split them into dates so every photo taken in January will be together, Mmm I wonder if I will be able to add tags to them as well then you would be able to view all the swan photos without searching through all the months, Something to think about there. Which ever way I do it, it has got to be easy to maintain.

Night Walk

I decided to go for a night walk tonight, It’s been such a nice day today I thought I would go out one more time.
Quite a nice sunset as well, The swans were settled down for the night and the birds were singing their last song, Very peaceful.

The male swan was a bit protective of his territory today, I managed to get a bit of video of it. Moments before this he chased off what we thought was a fish. Click on the image to see the video.

Gardening In The Sun

Another hot sunny day today, So we spent the day in the garden.
Our first raised bed did not succeed, This we think was down to the fact we laid some clear poly over the bed to protect it but we still had slugs getting in and cats walking over it, So we decided to take up that bed and make another in it’s place and placed the little green house cover we got over that.
The green thing in the background is another green house thing that my mother gave us. We have got some more seeds planted in that. In the second picture on the right we have made another raised bed for the bigger veg when the time is right.

The pond area is coming on quite nice I like this bit of the garden, It’s now looking a bit more wild and we have lots if insects around it, We have 9 tadpoles, 2 newts, 1 leech and loads of little black things that i don’t know the name of.

Beat of Blue, Last Gang

Back in 2007 we where asked to do a video for my cousins band Last Gang, They had a single coming out called Beat Of Blue. We where only given a weeks notice and not told what they wanted till we turned up, We had 2 cameras and we filmed them play live, We tried to make it look raw and a bit punky. The light was low so we got what we could that night.
One thing we did do after the nights filming was to go out and film some police action, We underestimated how difficult that would be, We would drive around most nights listening for the sound of sirens then drive off in that direction hoping to get some footage, In the end we got about 8 mins of footage in about 3 weeks. The swans are back

Over the last 3 days the swans have not been around their nest, We thought that they might have moved away but this morning on our walk with Horace they were on their nest. This evening they were not too far from the nest, We managed to feed them and I got some more photos, This one being the best one.

Yesterday we where given a huge plant for our tiny pond, So today I decided to split it up into smaller plants suitable for our pond, I then felt a strange tingling feeling on one of my fingers, I looked at where it was tingling and saw a leech stuck to my finger. ARRRRH. I had to get a photo of it before it sucked me dry of my bodily fluids.

The swans have been swimming about with their cygnets this week, Louise has got some good video footage of them, Over the next week we will edit all the best bits together and then put them up here in the video pages in the mean time you can view some photos I have taken of the cygnets in the photography pages.

Compost bin

We've had a black plastic compost bin for about 10 months now and we checked it the other day to find the compost was slimy, I did a search on Google about what could be done, Some one said that if we put wood chippings into it it would help, So with us doing some woodturning we had a good pile of sawdust and we decided to make another compost bin, So we built a wooden frame around the black bin and nailed some wicker panels to it, Then Louise took the black bin out (I was at work at the time) she said it absolutely stunk, Anyway she added the sawdust and mixed it in now a week later it is looking a lot better and not as slimy as it was, we will keep adding sawdust to it and turning it over regularly.

Our first vegetable patch

We have made a plot to plant our vegetables, We planted our first ones today they are rocket, onion, cabbage, leek and purple broccoli.
Nothing has grown yet and it's been ages since we planted them, must be about half an hour ago. :)
Anyway I am looking forward to seeing them grow, Any plant I've ever had has always died but Louise has had more luck than me.

The cygnets have hatched

When walking Horace yesterday we saw the new cygnets in the nest, Today we watched them for about half an hour, I managed to get a photograph of them, I have a Lumix FX30 and a small pair of binoculars so I put the camera in macro mode and zoomed in and put the binoculars up to the lens, It was a bit difficult to keep steady but I did manage to get this shot. Aren't they cute. I will be taking the video camera with me this evening, Lets hope they are out again.

Gardening Again

Had a day off work today because my car had broken down and was in the garage. So me and Louise decided to do something in the garden. We had this tree given to us and we decided to plant it today.
First Louise built a small stone wall to hold the banking up then we planted the tree in front of that. We also thought we should change the pond water, because a few weeks ago we got hold of some frog spawn and put that in the pond, After a couple of weeks we couldn't see anything living in the pond and today decided to drain it, When we got to the bottom of the pond we saw something move and it was the tadpoles then we saw a couple of newts, so we thought we would leave what was in the bottom of the pond and just fill it back up with water. I got some photos of the newt.

Garden

We are doing something with the garden, Our aim to make it look nice by using as much as we can from reclaimed items. We have used pallets to make a fence, I got hold of some wicker panels from the skip at work.
Someone down the street had chopped a couple of trees down and Louise dragged them home and has cut them up to use them as borders for her plant bed, All the stone came out of the garden. So weather permitting we will gradually do bits here and there and I will post then here.

Feeding the Goose

Our friend the Swan was not interested in feeding this afternoon, Some other people got there before us. So we took the rest of the bread with us and we saw a goose so we threw it some bread, I managed to get some photos and a bit of video of it.

Went to Lady Wood this morning, Nice place you can forget you are just a half a mile from any roads. We didn't see any wildlife though but that happens, Next time we might see loads.

I manage to get about 2 seconds of footage of a fox that lives near by, I was scrambling to get the camera and video capture software set up before he went, But as usual he had gone by the time I got it set right.

Nuthatch?

We went to a nature reserve today, A nice little place it was just off a main road in a small town, I'm not going to say exactly where but on our way round we saw a hole in a tree and thought that woodpeckers might have made it, Anyway me been a bit curious wanted to know what was in the hole, Most of the time it is just crisp packets and beer cans, You couldn't just look inside because it was pitch black so I stuck my camera in the hole opening and with my flash on I took a picture. I got a surprise when I looked at what had been taken..
Now we have identified this as a Nuthatch but if we are wrong can you tell us what it is..

Swans

Over the last 7 months or so we have been feeding some Swans that have been hanging around the canal, We are sure that they recognise us now as when we first saw them they would hiss at Horace and get all defensive, Now though they don't bother with him even when he is close when we are feeding them.

Department Closed

I've been the manager of a screenprint department for about 4 years now and 2 weeks ago I found out that my department was going to be closed down. For me I'm glad that it's happening because I didn't like screen printing, After 26 years in the trade it had become a chore. I have another job within the company to do now, As for the rest of my lads well one might take his redundancy money, one is going to the packing department and Lee will be going to another company. I've enjoyed working with these lads and will keep in touch with them.

With the price of oil going up each week and petrol going up faster and our government adding tax to it at an even faster rate, We get people saying what can we do about it? Well we just need someone to go out and get a franchise to build the Air Car here in the UK, I would buy one like a shot and stick one in the eye of the government (till they decide to tax air)

It's Raining

Sunday morning and it's raining, Horace still gets his walks along the canal side, We took some bread for the ducks and the swans, Been careful not to tread on the hundreds of snails on the path as we walk. On our way we go under a bridge and as we just got under a train went past and I heard a fluttering sound coming from the top of the bridge, so I looked up and saw a load of feathers floating down, It was like a scene in a cartoon when a bird gets shot or something. Poor pigeon. I didn't think of taking a photo untill after but here is a picture of the bridge.

On our evening walk we fed the swans and we heard a frog in the canal we also saw a heron stood in the weir.
Despite the rain it has been warm and I have enjoyed our walks today. It has now started thundering, not seen any lightning yet but it does sound far away.

I have re done the website to incorporate a blog as the first page. I did this because I couldn't think of what to put on the first page. I have also changed the way the pictures are displayed to make it easier for you the viewer and for me to update. Any update will be displayed in the blog and you will be able to navigate to the relevant sections on the right.

Well I just tried out Blogger, What a nightmare that turned out to be.
The editing feature didn't work correctly in Safari so I turned to Firefox, That went ok but adding pictures was a pain and slow, The pictures kept going to the front of the text and not where the cursor was so I had to move them into position. When I eventually got my pictures in the right place and viewed my blog it did look good but I don't want to go through that every time I post. I soon gave up and came back to RapidWeaver.

I had to walk Horace today my girlfriend (Louise) has gone to a circus with a friend and her 2 kids.

Walking a dog is all new to me, I've always been a dog hater (it was well know amongst my friends and family), I've never had the time for them, Always thought they stunk and shat everywhere, I could never understand why anyone would want a dog, Then I got a girlfriend and she had a dog (Horace), I didn't like him and I wouldn't even touch him, She knew I didn't like dogs so she always called him away.

Then one day Louise ended up moving in and the dog had to come with her, It was very strange at first, I didn't like it but I thought he comes with her so I have to give him a chance, 7 months on and I wouldn't be without him now, He is so good and friendly, Having Horace and Louise here has changed me for the better, I get out a lot more than I ever did, Hence the reason for this blog, I thought it would be good to record what we have been up to.

Turning Wood

I have just started doing a bit of woodturning. Back in February I got a small lathe for about £100 and some tools for about £60.
Its a good little lathe capable of making things up to 330mm long by 200mm in diameter, or so I'm led to believe, In reality the tool rest bar gets in the way of the wood at this size so you have to do things at a shorter length, That's not a real problem as me and my girlfriend will be making bowls, dibbers and mushrooms amongst other things.

We started off doing mushrooms, here are our first ones as well as my attempt at an egg.

Then we had ago at some dibbers...

We made a few of these and some more mushrooms so that we could get used to the tools.

A few weeks later we went to a wood merchants called John Boddy's in Boroughbridge.
We bought some bargain bits of wood and some Banksia nuts, In the picture below you can see the nut before and after I turned it.

The rings you see are holes in the nut, The nut is covered in a hard shell and under that is a red fur, It's very strange when you first see it.

I then made this little bowl out of the bargain wood, This is my first bowl.

I have made another bowl but not got a photo of that yet.

Well this is the first time I've attempted to do a blog, Not sure where to start, Do I start with things I did months ago or start with things that are happening from today?
I suppose I could start with things today and just put in things that have happened before as I go along.
